It's Thursday (Friday). Who's Thirsty? Taking a Smoke Break with Mescal.

If you read our previous post then you know celebrations were in order this past week. And since we'd already dabbled in our love for sandwiches, we thought the next best choice would be to indulge in our love for smoke.

Before your imagination takes off, we're not talking about THAT kind of smoke. The love we're referring to is found in bites of chicken at your local bbq joint. It's in the fish dip at your local deli and probably on your lox platter too. It's sitting in your spice cabinet, mingling with the paprika and on your bar, in your favorite scotch. This week, we found it in our low ball glass shaking up every expectation we could've had.

It was celebration time, now where would we go? We ran through over a dozen options that would suit the occasion, discussing ambiance, cuisine and wine lists when we realized the perfect place was right under our nose. Lola Gaspar is a keeper of some of our greatest memories from sharing spanish wine under stringing outdoor lights to sitting side-by-side at a corner table, isolated from the rest of the crowd laughing till we cry. We definitely made the right decision and were rewarded by the cocktail gods as a result.

The protagonist of this post is none other than the current day trendy mescal and what this Downtown Santa Ana favorite did to shake things up. Lola's seasonal cocktail menu screams summer at a craft bar in Tulum, with sweet, spicy and refreshing options revolving largely around tequila and mescal. With two-thirds of their offerings featuring one of the two in addition to the warm, summer night gracing us with its humidity, we chose the Horatio Sanz. The combination of xicaru mescal, fresh OJ & lime is uniquely topped with a port splash, taking the golden cocktail to a deep, ruby red, while adding a layer of pleasant bitterness to the smoke. The citrus keeps the drink refreshing from start to finish and your palate fresh enough to order a second.

Cheers - to another great memory and to a helluva memorable drink!
